Here's the scene: It's the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 1970s: The very streets which had previously played host to the traditional 'blocos de carnaval' for the massive February outdoor party that is Carnival, and the passionate guitar-led laments of the most beatiful choros, are now beginning to swing under a very different suingue: the imported sound of American soul and funk, courtesy of the now legendary local DJs: Big Boy, Ademir Lemos, Paulao, Monsieur Lima and many other sound systems with names like Soul Grand Prix, Furacao 2000 and Black Power…

Many records that today have become the holy grail of collectors played out the soundtrack to this era, from the Dutch group Reality, through Cane & Abe, Masterfleet to Raw Soul Express, Mickey Murray and of course the classics of James Brown, The Meters, Kool & The Gang, B.T. Express and Bohannon that played on the suburban decks alongside the post-Bossa of Cassiano, Wilson Simonal, Tim Maia and Jorge Ben.

The dance bands, the so-called "bandas de baile", that played live sets mixed in with the records that the DJs dropped had to be incredibly versatile to stay up there with the eclectic sounds being played - a successful melding of samba with soul-funk and even Italian pop songs and French chansons!

The true popstars of the bailes were organist Ed Lincoln's classic line-up that featured Orlandivo, Durval Ferreira, Tony Tornado and other killer players - the group which kicked off the whole scene a decade before. From these early sensations the "bandas de baile" were formed. Groups like Rancho, Brasil Show, Fanks and the biggest cult of all, and still active today 30 years on, the Copa 7.

Bands with the same name are nothing new in the music business and in the case of Copa 7 they shared their respected 'Appellation Controlee' with the second line-up of J.T. Meireles' Copa 5, also called Copa 7 and which only recorded a single LP for London Records in the late 60s*. Our Copa 7 launched their recording career with the rare single, and classic baile groove, Sabada [b/w Copa 7 No Samba - Top Tape]. This song, written by Ronaldo Barcellos, a collaborator with both Banda Black Rio and Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti, is still the number one request at the regular shows the group command in the few clubs still carrying the torch for the philosophy behind the original bailes.

The first LP O Som da Copa 7 came out in 1979 and was followed closely by 1980's O Som da Copa 7 Vol 2, the originals of which are extremely rare today and have become a holy grail for those seeking out something special in Brasilian music beyond the stereotypical batucada.

To get some idea of the spirit the band purveys on these LPs one has to imagine the Mizell Brothers had dropped by the far flung suburbs of Rio (places like Madureira, Ramos, Penha, Cascadura, Abolicao, Nilopolis) with an ARP String synth under their arms and found a samba soul group that mixed Erlon Chaves with the Blackbyrds, whilst drinking beer at the same table as vocalist Damiao, devotee of that sweet voice of reggae, Horace Andy! Mix this heady brew together, recording sessions at the Estudios Haway (Hawaii Studios was the Studio One of the Black Rio bands), and we're ready to get down!

Check out the mellow instrumental funk of Gangorra written by guitarist/arranger Dionisio, (now living and playing in New York), the humour of Plantei Vagem deu Feijao and the Norman Harris-style phase pedal guitar that you could almost call Philly-Samba. Coupled with Paulinho's bass on Mulher Absoluta, with its full on chorus and phase pedals, it all adds up to make this debut LP obligatory listening for anyone trying to understand the true sound of the bailes.

In Vol 2 Dionisio hits the right note yet again with the sublime scat vocal track Agora e Minha Vez. Here and on the other instrumental tracks the Black Rio atmosphere is no accident - Banda Black Rio's second drummer, Paulinho Black, played in some of the literally hundreds of line-ups that Copa 7 have passed through. Maria Joana has that 'everyone partying together feel' in a samba of sheer 'alegria' that sounds like something from the Fatback Band or Brass Construction.

It's possible to see similarities between the music of Copa 7 with that of Ricardo Marrero's contribution and his influence of North American Black music with its orchestral feel to the compositions, arrangements and so on….

All praise goes out to Whatmusic.com for making such a rare and expensive collectors' LPs finally available to everyone.

In Brasil today, one of the keenest audiences for the 'new sound' of things from the past, and specifically Brasilian Rare Groove, is the Sao Paulo scene, where the Copa 7 have recently undergone a kind of renaissance in the minds and ears of younger funksters mainly through the auspices of collector Rodrigo Piza and his Phono 70 and the Sunday bailes led by Marco Mattoli & Seu Conjunto.

Now, for a note of extra-musical interest, to get into the Copa 7 scene is to commit an act of gastronomic exaggeration with a great big portion of feijoada wolfed down in freaky portions and lysergically enriched for the ears to dance to!

One of the best brazilian boogie LP I ever heard !

A solid influence over Brazilian popular music in the 80's, arranger/producer Lincoln Olivetti helped substantially (in duo with his partner Robson Jorge) to shape the sound of, among other top-line artists, Tim Maia, Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Rita Lee, Luís Melodia (who also recorded “Traição", by Olivetti, in his Pintando o Sete, 1991), Fagner (Amigos e Canções, 1998), Zizi Possi and Marina Lima (her first album, Simples Como Fogo). Olivetti also had enormous hits like “Rio Babilônia" (with Robson Jorge), and his compositions were included in the soundtracks of broadly popular soap-operas (like Baila Comigo, 1981). Celebrated for infusing soul music overtones in the country's productions, Olivetti's formula was so successful and influential that also was responsible for an excessive commercialism that ended up making many of the Brazilian releases in the 80's to sound like the same. In the next decade he was rediscovered and his musical qualities shone again in works like Ed Motta's Manual Prático para Festas, Bailes e Afins Vol. 1, with highlights for “Daqui pro Méier". A fundamental influence over the acclaimed producer Memê (Marcello Mansur), Olivetti wrote some of the string arrangements in Memê e Eles (1999). In 2001, after Universal refused Sandra de Sá's debut album in the recording company, a selection of Motown classics produced by Dudu Marote, Olivetti was summoned to realize the project. In the same year he also produced Rita Ribeiro's Comigo, made the arrangements for Nana Caymmi's Desejo and arranged the songs performed by Nana Caymmi, Daniela Mercury, Leila Pinheiro and The Women's Philharmonic at the Ibirapuera park (São Paulo). It's the eclectic soundtrack to Walter Hill's cult classic gang-warfare movie from 1979, The Warriors.

Containing three pieces of Barry de Vorzon's excellent original score, the rest of The Warriors soundtrack uses the tracks that the movie's radio DJ plays whilst giving a running commentary on The Warriors progress as they attempt to get back to their home turf of Coney Island after being framed for killing a gang leader who was trying to unite all the gangs in the area.

One of Francis Lai's more sought-after 1970s scores, this album may not be that hard to find but is almost always expensive because it features an otherwise-unavailable track by French pop legend Johnny Hallyday. That's a pity, because this album is a really tight, madly funky soundtrack with some killer beats, breaks, funk tracks, drums and Rhodes. The main theme is reprised throughout the album, which is a good thing because the melody is tight, punchy and insistent, so suits Christian Gaubert's funk arrangements perfectly. Plenty of serious funk instrumental business for sampling or playing out.

A definite departure from the type of earthy, groove-oriented soul-jazz he usually embraced, Leaving This Planet is perhaps Charles Earland's most ambitous album -- not necessarily his best, but certainly his most surprising. Responding to the fusion revolution, Earland plays keyboards and various synthesizers in addition to his usual Hammond B-3 organ and thrives in a very electric setting. The album (reissued on a 79-minute CD in 1993) isn't fusion in the same sense as Miles Davis, Larry Coryell or Weather Report -- rather, he incorporates funk and rock elements in a manner not unlike the early-'70s experiments of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. And in fact, those greats (as well as trumpeter Eddie Henderson) are among the superb soloists featured. Whether the Philadelphian is embracing Hub's "Red Clay" or Henderson's "Recorda-Me" or fine compositions of his own (which range from the congenial, pleasant "Brown Eyes" to the abstract "Warp Factor 8"), he leaves no doubt just how much he's enjoying this surprising change of pace.

For those who discover this group, They are mostly known for their Dario Argento's sountrack like 'profondo rosso' or 'dawn of the dead' but their discography is huge and really interesting.
It's a kind of UFO for me : I don't know why I like their music but I like it really much !
I have been certainly traumatized by a Argento movie when I was young :)

Tatsurō Yamashita is a Japanese musician, and producer. He is also known as husband and producer of Mariya Takeuchi.

After the hits of single "Ride on Time" and same-titled album which was released in 1980, all his albums have reached the top five on the Japanese music chart ( Oricon weekly chart) .

His most well-known song is "Christmas Eve". It first appeared on his album Melodies in 1983. In 1986, this song was released as single. In 1989, "Christmas Eve" was used as the theme song of a television advertisement by the Central Japan Railway Company. This made the song more popular, and to date, it has sold over 1,800,000 copies. This song became a standard Japanese Christmas song, and the single is the 37th best-selling single record in Japan.

Since the 1980s, he has written many songs for male idol singers formed by Johnny & Associates, such as Masahiko Kondo, and Shonentai. Kinki Kids' biggest hits, "Glass no Shonen" and "Aisareruyorimo Aishitai" were composed and produced by Yamashita.

He's for my one of the main artist of the early 80 who import funky music in Japan.

Dafé was born into a family of musicians in Rio de Janeiro, having learned how to play the cavaquinho, mandolin and accordion with his father. Later, he studied the piano and the bass, having joined a few orchestras. In the 1960s, he started out as a vocalist in nightclubs in Rio and São Paulo. In the 70s he added soul music elements to his songs, as heard on the album "Venha Matar Saudades" (1978, with Banda Black Rio). He was established as one of the most important names in Brazilian soul music, along with Tim Maia, Cassiano and Gerson King Kombo. He's had songs recorded by artists like Nana Caymmi ("Passarela") and Tânia Maria ("A Cruz").
Check the song "De Alegria Raiou O Dia", recently covered by Seu Jorge.

Le Pamplemousse was the brainchild of Michael Lewis and Laurin Rinder. Much like Phil Spector, a decade earlier, these producers would create outlets for their musical genius. These outlets or studio groups, would often feature the same musicians and singers. Interchangeable pieces in the master plan. The faces might change but the name and sound were constant.

Some of the many singers that comprised Le Pamplemousse were: Brenda, Valerie and Shirley Jones (The Jones Girls), Alexandra Brown, Patricia Hall, Mortonette Jenkins, and Laurin himself.

Morning Noon and Night were a six piece group who released one album for the United Artists subsiduary Roadshow Record label in 1977.
The group were introduced to legendary producer Michael Stokes by Sam Taylor in 1977.
The resulting album became popular, initially, for the club anthem 'Bite Your Granny', which proved highly popular in the U.K. nightclubs at the time.
The track 'Time' has become the track that many soul punters go for today
Musicians involved with the project included Eddie Willis, Rodrick 'Peanut' Chandler, Rudy Robinson and George Roundtree.
The group disappeared from the soul scene after this release.

1976 - El Coco - Let's get it together

El Coco was the best-known of several projects by cult disco favorites W. Michael Lewis and Laurin Rinder, who produced, arranged, wrote, and played all the instruments on the vast majority of their material.
Their distinctive sound was partly a result of their jazz training, which showed up not only in their arrangements and chord progressions, but in the overall musicality and sonic imagination. Rinder had been a longtime session and touring drummer for rock and soul artists, and played on sessions at Motown and Muscle Shoals.
He met keyboardist Lewis in Los Angeles during the late '60s at an audition for the Standells; the two went on to play in a rock band called Joshua, and in 1973 were hired by the AVI label to play on some extended RB remixes geared for danceclub play.
Thus hooked into the emerging disco sound, Rinder and Lewis began producing and recording their own tracks in 1975, issuing the LP Caravan under the fictitious group name El Coco (a drug reference).
Mondo Disco followed in 1976, as did Let's Get It Together, the point where they really hit their stride.
The title cut was co-written by singer Merria Ross and was a substantial club hit, breaking El Coco on the disco scene.
The title tracks on 1977's Cocomotion and 1978's Dancing Paradise were also successful, with the former (again co-written by Ross) ranking as El Coco's best-remembered outing. By this time, Rinder and Lewis were producing TV theme music as well, and began issuing side projects on the Butterfly label as well; these alternate guises included Tuxedo Junction, Saint Tropez, le Pamplemousse, Rinder Lewis, and the Rinlew Allstars. Following 1979's Dance Man, the duo retired the El Coco name to concentrate on their other projects; in the wake of the anti-disco backlash, they remained in television for a time during the early '80s before retiring from music.

The trio, all P-Funk veterans by 1978 was originally comprised of Debbie Wright, Jeanette Washington and Mallia Franklin. Wright and Washington had been touring with P-Funk since the first large scale tour in 1975, becoming the first official female members of P-Funk. The third member, Mallia Franklin had been an associate and confidant of Clinton's since she was in her early teens. Franklin brought William 'Bootsy' Collins from Toronto to Clinton in 1971.Debbie Wright and Mallia Franklin had been session vocalists for Parliament-Funkadelic since the early seventies. Parlet's debut album 'Pleasure Principle' was released in February 1978. It was the first female satellite from the George Clinton Mothership with the title track being the first release. It reached #66 on the R&B charts. Debbie Wright left Parlet only a month after the albums release. Wright's abrupt departure stunted the promotional growth of the album and it floated without the groups support for months.

With a summer tour looming, the remaining members hired Shirley Hayden to replace Wright and tour in support of the album. After a summer tour with Bootsy's Rubber Band and big funk events like the monumentous Chicago funk fest at Soldier Field, Clinton opted to drop Parlet from the P-Funk Anti-Tour in the fall of 1978 and chose to take the Brides only. Speculation for Clinton's choice swirled from money issues to intimidation of the groups powerful show. Parlet began to perform outside of the Clinton veil opening for groups like WAR. They returned to the Parliament-Funkadelic fold for a European tour in the winter of 1978 with P-Funk and Brides Of Funkenstein. Theirstability would be short lived with Mallia Franklin making a decision to leave Parlet as soon as they returned to American soil. She sighted the treatment of Parlet, as well as an opportunity to lead a band with bassist, Donnie Sterling as her motives. The proposed Sterling Silver Starship with Franklin and Sterling began recording in early 1979. At that same time, Parlet was regrouping with a new member, Janice Evans.

After the arrival of Janice Evans, the second Parlet album for Casablanca "Invasion Of The Booty Snatchers" was released in April of 1979. The album was comprised of songs already recorded with Franklin (Ridin' High, No Rump To Bump and Huff-N-Puff), a song with road manager, Cheryl James as the third lead singer (Booty Snatchers) and new songs recorded with Evans (You're Leaving and Don't Ever Stop (Lovin' Me, Needin' Me). Casablanca attempted to save their investment with a promotional blitz for the album, but Clinton's fervor for the group had diminished with the exits of Wright and then Franklin. Shirley Hayden and Jeanette Washington continued on with Janice Evans for the minimal promotion and touring that the P-Funk organization was allowing for the group. The trio did perform on all of the legendary "World's Greatest Funk Festivals" around the country in the summer of 1979, featuring Bootsy's Rubber Band, Rick James, P-Funk, The Brides and others. Despite the inconsistency of the group, the first single "Ridin' High" turned out to be Parlet's highest charting single at #49 on the R&B charts.

Laurin rinder & w michael lewis produced many great disco acts in the late 70's on the avi and butterflylabels but it was their own albums that were the real classics., of these projects, 1977's electronic discoconcept album, 'seven deadly sins' contained such seminal garage/loft classics as 'lust', 'greed' and 'envy'plus the ahead of it's time dark proto-techno cut 'anger', which was a massive ron hardy/music box fave, andwas sampled on carl craig's 'tres demented', and re-edited on moxie #1 (allegedly also by carl craig)packaged in original picture cover as above.

"Funk de Luxe" is a compilation of 13 really rare funky tracks (CD version) produced in France in the 70's. Do not look for well known artists, for national or international stars. These tracks never knew the CD area ! 100 % analogic and proud of it. But if you want to know who were animating this joyous Funk celebration, from its deep roots side to its jazzy style, you would be surprised to find the most sharpy studio musicians of that time. This LP is one of his very best funk soundtracks - it's killer late 70s, tight funk all through. Gainsbourg parodies the disco feel but makes it so damn funky it's unrecognisable. Electric piano, choppy guitar, slap/pluck bass, tight drums, wicked tunes. Mostly instrumental, this album is a superb funk soundtrack that, for our money, rates with Hanged Man and Coffy for sheer funk.

From a mid-70s Belmondo movie, this French score sees Francis Lai move away from his traditional lush arrangements into a harder, more guitar-lead environment. A tough action movie calls for tough sounds, and this album is no exception. The music is as dark as the album sleeve, featuring menacing brass, guitar and analogue synth. Some of the music has a progressive rock influence and even a slight middle eastern feel in places. There are several outstanding funk numbers (Number one, jack pot...). Recorded at the legendary Studios Davout, source of many killer French funk records... must be something in the air...

One of my favorite brazillian mellow groove.
Hyldon was one of the bearers of the torch of soul music in Brazil, coming after Tim Maia, Cassiano, and Gerson King Combo. A former partner of Maia's and member of Cassiano's band, Hyldon had his first hit in 1975 with the ballad "Na Rua, na Chuva, na Fazenda," included on his first LP of the same name, which also had another hit with "Na Sombra de uma Árvore." After some ostracism, Hyldon left soul music and devoted himself to children's music. Contemporary bands like Kid Abelha and Jota Quest have been renovating an interest of the newer generations in Hyldon's work through their re-recordings of "Na Rua, na Chuva, na Fazenda" and "As Dores do Mundo."
